It’s that time of year again, when the bookings open for the annual creative recovery courses that I teach in the beginning of every year. Bookings for The Artist’s way 2015 opened this week and pre-bookings for The Vein of Gold are now open as well. Email me to pre-book.
This is a time of year when we generally start to unwind and ease our way towards a well deserved rest period. Yet every November I find myself getting more and more excited for the new year and all the new opportunities ahead. I simply love teaching these courses. There is noting better than helping other fledgeling creatives on their path to living a fulfilled, meaningful life.
The 2015 courses promises to be the most exciting set yet. I have loads of new activities, tools and methods for facilitating creative recovery and self discovery, that I can’t wait to share with my students.
Every year’s students are so different from the previous and I am always amazed at the variety of people who come into my life through these courses. Yet, the problems they are faced with are always the same. I meet people who feel alone, who feel frustrated, who feel sad or even hopeless. I meet people who are scared of their ideas and who fear judgement and failure. Mostly, my classes are filled with people who are scared. Scared to live the life they dream of living.
Every year, without fail, I see these same fearful people blossom into happy, brave, creative individuals who tackle life’s opportunities and challenges with confidence and joy. There are few things more rewarding than seeing the metamorphosis first hand. It is wonderful to think that I play even a small part in this magical transformation.
2015 will be no exception. I cannot wait to meet my new students and friends. Sharing their creative journey sheds so much light on my own creative life, that I cannot help but be thankful for these interactions. Some students come into my life for a season, but others have become good friends that are here to stay.
I look forward to welcoming you into the creative fold. Join me on this journey of creative recovery and self-discovery. If not now, then when?
Washi tape is as pretty as it gets, and it’s also versatile as hell. Washi is one of my favorite desk accessories and I never leave home without at least one roll in my laptop bag. Here are my top 7 ways with washi.
Which do you want to try?
What are you waiting for? Stock up on some tape in the shop and make, make, make.
Be sure to share shots of your creative creations with Ampersand products on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Tag #Ampersandss and I’ll share it on the Ampersand pages.
Friends, I’m looking forward to get to know you better. Soon, I am sure, we will be fast friends. Today I am extending the hand of friendship by telling you a bit more about me and the team. I’d like to give you a small insight into who we are.
I am Lelanie, the idea generator, stationery obsessive and owner of Ampersand social stationery.
I am a multi-tasking, on-my-feet-thinking, creative-living, life-loving girl. I suspect I might just have started the store to satisfy my insatiable appetite for lovely stationery. What better way to hide my addiction than through the legitimate front of this business? I am the chief cook and bottle washer doing anything and everything that is required in the daily running of the business.
I am a keen traveller. My most recent trip to Hong-Kong was a mind blowing experience, filled with deep spiritual experiences, wonder and awe. I am a secret nerd, that can quote most Shakespeare plays off by heart and never passes on an opportunity to learn something new. The 50′s housewife within me loves to decorate my home, cook for my hubby and fawn over my pups. There is a dash of rocker in here to, as is evident in my dress sense and love of rock music. Nothing cures like a long drive with my music blasting. I dream of being a creative living maverick and long to share my passions with fellow creatives. I live to blog and love to live. I swim upstream and struggle to understand herd-mentality. I stand up for what I believe and speak what I feel. I strive to live with integrity, honesty and respect.
I feel that there are a some things that should be left to the pros- Graphic design and photography being two of them. That is why I brought in Heinrich and Charl, the two freelance contributors for Ampersand social stationery.
Heinrich is a talented architect by day, with a love for sustainable design and unique design concepts. When the moon comes out, so does his alter ego, and he becomes my graphic designer extraordinaire. He is the talent behind the branding. I suspect he might have psychic abilities as well, as no other designer has ever been able to understand my vision and make it a reality as he does.
Charl is a moving pictures wizard, running his own production company, but enjoys freezing some frames now and then as a freelance photographer. He has a boundless source of energy and is a photo shoot cheerleader, especially when we are shooting shots of me. Charl’s joi de vivre is contagious, and he always gets the best shots.
Together we make up this creative trifecta.
Friends, you find yourself on this site dedicated to creative living, reading blog posts and perusing products, but do you ever wonder what the purpose is of it all? Maybe, despite hanging out here, you are still wondering why it is necessary to live a beautiful, unique and inspired life.
One of my biggest aims in creating this store, and essentially this online community, is the hope that I can, even in some small way, help you to find your one unique voice and taste- something that you will be able to express through the unique products that litter your desk and are of use to you on a daily basis. It is so easy to swim with the school and just go with the flow. Often we yearn for more, and that small voice, deep inside starts to complain and mumble about the stranglehold of the status quo. Why do our desks have to be uniform- military in their look and functionality? What is wrong with adding a dash of personality and maybe, just maybe, an element of fun?
We are all individuals and what works for one does not necessarily work for another. Why not give expression to this inner, true self? And what better way to do this than through your workspace? Whether it be from home, in a creative company or in a corporate environment. Wouldn’t it make you heart sing a little if you were surrounded with a bit of beauty and some colour? Have you ever considered that by being happier, you might perform your work duties all the better and contribute more to the attitude of your environment?
We tend to discount these small changes as insignificant. Yet they have great potential to ignite an inner spark. Each of us have a yearning for beauty in life. It is our inner child calling out to us. All people have this inner child, but as creative individuals it is very important that we give heed to its needs. If we betray or ignore our inner child, we essentially betray ourselves. It is the part of us where creative energy and ideas are generated, and by ignoring it, we are essentially tuning off the creative tap.
Another way to coax our inner child to the fore is by participating in a creative recovery or personal development course, such as ‘The Artist’s Way’ or ‘The Vein of Gold’. Courses such as these coach us, guide us and motivate us to mine for our creative gold. They help us to tune in to the voice of our inner child. It aids us on our creative journey, providing us with the necessary tools for living an inspired, meaningful life.
Why go through life feeling like something is missing? Life can either be very long, or very short indeed. Every day does not need to be a battle or a drudgery. We can indeed go through our lives with the song of motivation and guidance in our hearts. All we need is the courage to reach out and take the first step.
What is the first step for you? To remake your desk or workspace into a more creative space? Or is to to ask for help and join a creative community? Is it to share and be inspired by fellow creatives? Maybe it is a journey of creative discovery through a course or workshop. You might want to spend some time journaling in a notebook that makes your inner child smile for its brightness. But whatever it may be, do not deny yourself the simple pleasure of living. Of living a happy life.
We only have the one, let’s make it count.
